Workers in southern Thailand are installing one of the growing number of wind turbines cropping up along the coastline. Like many countries, Thailand is looking for clean and economically affordable ways to generate electricity.
STORY: Thailand has constant low-level winds, not the big gales, as opposed to other parts of the world where most wind turbine technology has developed.
One family-owned company has spent seven years developing a low level generator wind turbine. It's smaller propeller-like blades and it's thinner polls are better suited to a low wind speed.
Not only is it a more efficient machine than the bigger turbines available from Western companies, but the cost is one-sixth the price of the imported ones.
Each turbine from the Thai Windmill Energy Company costs around ten thousand U.S. dollars compared to $66,000 U.S. dollars for a western turbine. And it can generate 2.5 kilowatts more of electricity.
The Managing Director of Thai Windmill Energy Company says homeowners who have a wind turbine can also sell their unused energy by having it automatically switched out to an electricity company.
[Kasidech Chuansatian,Thai Windmill Energy]: "We want to see all the coastal lines in Thailand both in Thai Bay and Andaman Sea full with wind turbines. It doesn't matter if the wind turbines are produced by us or from others. That's our task and we are determine to do it."
Greenpeace has set up a campaign of "Quit Coal, Lead the Energy Revolution Tour," on its Greenpeace flagship and it's sailing Thailand's major ports.
Thailand has at present a wind farming pilot project in Koh Lan Island in Thai Bay. With about 40 wind turbines on the island they have managed to give the villagers an alternative from diesel for their electricity consumption.
